The Wine Messenger’s mission is to offer our customers a broad selection of high quality wines. These wines are individually selected from small growers around the world and delivered right to your door. We are lovers of the product as well as lovers of our site, and we firmly believe that you will be too. Just a brief tid bit on one of the reasons that we love wine so much is for over 7,000 years, wine has benefited the human race. It has quenched thirst, and warded off disease, it has acted as an antiseptic in wartime, and as a muse to poets, writers, scholars, politicians and other prominent figures. What other man-made drink can claim such a record?
Since 1995, we have built ourselves into the source you can trust providing you with good wines – often award-winning in their home country – at reasonable prices.
All of our wines share the following characteristics:
1. All have undergone a lengthy vetting process – Our tasting panel reviews thousands of wines each year to bring you the very best, and we offer only those wines that meet our exacting standards. Our direct import model allows us to bring you new wines from exciting regions faster than through conventional channels, and we never have distributors forcing us to sell their unpopular wines.
2. All are thoroughly researched by our wine staff, and each receives a detailed written description from our President complete with production information, regional and winery information, as well as detailed tasting notes and a rating. What our Ratings mean… 96 to 100 Truly outstanding, exceptional 93 to 95+ Superb wine, superior 91 to 92+ Very good wine with fine distinctions 88 to 90 Good wine, well made, special characteristics Below 88 Wines that will not be considered
3. All are backed by our 100% Satisfaction Guarantee, one of the best return policies in the business. If for any reason you are unsatisfied with the wine you have purchased, let us know within 30 days and we’ll pick up the wine and refund you for all unopened bottles. Wine is an awe inspiring product with a rich history.
For over 7,000 years, wine has benefited the human race. It has quenched thirst and warded off disease. It has acted as an antiseptic in times of war, and as a muse to poets, writers and scholars during times of peace. No other drink can claim such pedigree.
Today, the quality of wine has improved considerably, particularly thanks to temperature control during fermentation, which has permitted vineyards to be planted in areas where it was impossible to make good wines before. Unfortunately, the modern age has also brought industrialization to the wine industry.
Large wineries now churn out millions of bottles of identically bland wine. Such wines, in our opinion, are chemical assemblages that rarely taste good, and certainly have no soul. When we began, in 1995, we wanted to offer our customers an alternative to these branded, mass-marketed wines, to provide them with a source for high-quality, reasonably priced wines from a variety of countries, regions and styles produced predominantly by small growers. To achieve these goals, we developed our own system of identifying, marketing and distributing our products. Our Selection Process We remain in contact with hundreds of small, family-owned wineries around the world and each year asses their recent releases alongside the wines from new wineries that sent us their offerings.
Typically we taste about 2,500 wines per year and from that select just a few hundred, new and old, to offer you, our customer. And, since we buy wines in all price ranges, The Wine Messenger can serve all your wine needs, from the simple everyday wine to the very best wines in the world. This system of constantly rotating our selection of wine is unique. Most U.S. distributors ‘carry the wines,’ which means they always have their entire selection of wines in inventory. Adding a new wine, and even more so, adding many new wines is, for them, a very capital-intensive endeavor.
As a result, bringing in a new line is often a laborious, time-consuming process requiring committees to be organized and slow-selling wines to be sold-out, which can take months. In addition, it prevents distributors from responding to vintage differences in a wine’s quality. At the Wine Messenger, our model enables us to be much more nimble in dealing with wineries. If we find a winery that we like, we can immediately add them to our portfolio. Similarly, if we feel that a wine that we have featured in the past is not of sufficient quality in a given year, we can find another wine we like and hope for improvements in the subsequent vintages.
Our quick and streamlined decision-making process, coupled with our direct import model enables us to be the first to introduce these new and exciting wines and wine regions to the U.S.Import Model In over a decade in the wine business, The Wine Messenger has developed very strong relationships with importers who, like us, feel that the quality of a wine is more important than the quantity produced or the discount offered.
The Wine Messenger, and its customers, benefit from these relationships in several important ways. Without cooperative, like-minded businesses, it would be very difficult for us to direct-import wine from other countries. Direct importing gives the Wine Messenger the ability to identify new regions or wineries and import products from them while the rest of the industry is still debating their relative merits, and waiting for old wines to sell out.
Our import partners also act as additional scouts, finding new wines and regions for us to explore. In addition, these partners, who share our values, have also become a great secondary source for wines that we cannot readily direct-import. Seasonality We tend to follow the natural cycle of seasons offering Whites, Rosés and light Reds in the late spring, summer and early fall; powerful Reds and Whites in the winter; and our very finest wines before the holidays. We choose wine only on the basis of quality. Price is never our first consideration; we must be seduced by the wine first. Because we source the wines directly, we also do not have distributors forcing us to carry substandard wines. Since most of our suppliers are individuals or families, we attach great importance to knowing and understanding our growers.
Many of them have become friends of ours over the years and all of them are considered among the very best in their respective regions.100% Satisfaction Guaranteed Trust is a vital component to our business. We recognize the difficulty in choosing from such a vast array of wines.
For this reason, we limit our selection to a reasonable number, and we try and provide our customers with as much information about each wine as possible. With so many great wines available, we want to encourage you to take chances without fearing that you will make a bad decision.
However, we recognize that tastes vary, and not every wine that we like will be loved equally by all of our customers. Nevertheless, we stand by our products 100%, and we offer our customers one of the best guarantees in the business. If for any reason you are unsatisfied with the wine you have purchased, let us know within 30 days and we’ll pick up the wine and refund you for all unopened bottles.
